Biology: Chemistry of Life: Introduction

Chemistry of Life

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever thought about why a tree is a tree and not a fish? A simple answer is that the chemical make-up of a tree is very different from that of a fish. It has a different chemistry. In this section, you will learn that chemistry is the study of the composition and properties of matter. You will learn that chemistry is closely related to biology because all living organisms are composed of chemical substances. In your study, you will look at the smallest units of matter that make a tree very different from a fish. Chemistry is an essential tool to understand the many wonderful stories that make up biology. However, we need only a little chemistry, not an entire course worth! So, let’s begin at the basic level; the atom.

Objectives
After you have completed this topic, you will be able to:

     1.  Describe the differences between atoms and elements.

     2.  Differentiate between the terms “cohesion,” “ adhesion” and “polarity.”

     3.  Define the term "acid".

     4.  Define the term "base".

     5.  Define the term "organic compound".

     6.  Identify the structures and functions of different types of carbon compounds.

     7.  Summarize the importance of energy in living things.

     8.  Differentiate between energy and chemical reactions.

     9.  Describe the role of enzymes in chemical reactions.

presentation Look at the presentation below to learn more about the chemistry of biology. Be sure your volume is set to a reasonable level. It is a good idea to take notes as you will be required to know this material.
